Historical Notes on the Period

The great Mahdist rebellion lasted from 1881 to 1898.

1881-1885

The years from 1881-85 saw the Mahdists take the Sudan, defeat the Egyptian armies sent to crush the rebellion and reach a stalemate with the British forces sent to support the Egyptian effort.

The British Army uniform was in the process of changing over to khaki which it did at least in the Sudan, via the adoption of ‘desert grey’ whole or part uniforms to replace home-service scarlet etc. The Egyptians wore mostly white uniforms.

For this pretty exciting and dangerous period use the ‘Sands of the Prophet’ British and Egyptian bundles.

1885 Onwards

After 1885 there was an uneasy stalemate during which period the Egyptian army was retrained and Anglicised into khaki. The British became fully uniformed in khaki and rearmed with magazine rifles, Maxim guns etc. Herbert Kitchener led the new Anglo-Egyptian army in the reconquest of the Sudan culminating in the colossal Battle of Omdurman and the utter defeat of the Mahdist  rebellion.

For this period use the British Army bundle from ‘Empire of Dust’

The Mahdist bundle is good for the whole rebellion era.

This collection brings that "Boy’s Own" heroism to life, providing everything you need to recreate the grueling marches and the frantic, close-quarters drama of a desert empire in collapse.

Notes

Once downloaded, the sheets can be printed as often as you like, which means you can build up Large British Colonial Armies very cheaply.

You will need scissors, a craft knife, glue, appropriate paper and some stiffer card for bases, all of which are described in the how-to section.

The figures are laid out in A4 format, which will print onto US legal sized paper, or will fit US letter size printed at 93%.

You can, of course, print the figures in any scale you choose, making them uniquely flexible in this respect.

You will need to make a stiff Card Base for each stand. Dimensions of the stand is up to you and your preferred rule system.
