I recently discovered new (to me) research showing the very substantial nature of timber bridges in the post-Roman era. Stamford Bridge probably looked more like this than the fanciful one in the 1066 book!

A bridge is a crucial strategic asset in Dark Age Britain wargaming. Bridges provide a vital crossing point over rivers and other bodies of water, which can be natural barriers that divide the battlefield. Controlling a Bridge gives a faction significant tactical advantages:

  • Dominance
  • Supply Lines
  • Mobility
From a visual standpoint, a wooden bridge adds a touch of realism and authenticity to a Dark Age Britain wargame. Its rustic appearance and intricate construction create a beautiful and historically accurate feature that enhances the overall aesthetic of the battlefield. The sight of a wooden bridge spanning a river can evoke a sense of adventure and intrigue, transporting players back to the Dark Age Britain.
Once downloaded, the sheets can be printed as often as you like, which means you can build up Many Bridges very cheaply.

You will need scissors, a craft knife, glue, appropriate paper and some stiffer card for bases, all of which are described in the how-to section.

The figures are laid out in A4 format, which will print onto US legal sized paper, or will fit US letter size printed at 93%. You can, of course, print the figures in any scale you choose, making them uniquely flexible in this respect.

Our Motto is Paper Armies, Proper Armies!
Enjoy.
