History
The British Afghan Wars were a series of conflicts between the British Empire and Afghanistan in the 19th century. The wars were primarily driven by British strategic interests in the region, as Afghanistan served as a buffer between India and Russia. The British Army, composed of Regular troops and Indian Sepoys, fought against the Afghan forces, which were often led by local tribal leaders.
The first Afghan War (1839-1842) ended in a disastrous defeat for the British, as they were forced to retreat from Kabul after suffering heavy losses. The second Afghan War (1878-1880) resulted in a British victory, leading to the signing of the Treaty of Gandamak and the establishment of British influence in Afghanistan. The third Afghan War (1919) was a brief conflict that ended with Afghanistan gaining independence from British control.
