Prussia and the German Confederation 28mm
The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 saw the formidable Prussian Army, the core of the burgeoning German military machine, come to the fore. This force was not solely Prussian; it was a coalition of German states, including those from the North German Confederation and the southern German states like Bavaria, Württemberg, and Baden, all fighting under Prussian leadership.
Characterised by its highly efficient mobilisation system, superior Krupp artillery, and a well-trained General Staff led by figures like Helmuth von Moltke, this "German Army" was a professional, conscript-based force that utilised railways for rapid deployment and emphasised initiative among its subordinate commanders.
This modern and well-organised military proved to be a decisive factor in its overwhelming victory over the French.
