French Village 1870 ‘Neuville’
Alphonse de Neuville was not only a superb military artist of the Franco-Prussian War period. He fought in the war too. His dramatic paintings have a wonderful feel for the time-worn surfaces of the houses in the French countryside, and the damage done by the new rifled shell-firing guns of the Prussian artillery.
I asked Franco Fusco to draw a selection of building models of the period, to include St Privat church, captured in one of de Neuville’s greatest pictures. I’ve painted them to try to bring the colour and character of the master’s work to your wargame table.
Of course, there was only one, strangely appropriate name we could give to our new town: Neuville
