The European theatre of World War II was a brutal and protracted conflict
that raged across the continent from 1939 to 1945. 
One of the most significant campaigns was the Italian Campaign,
which began in 1943 with the Allied invasion of Sicily.

In 1944, the Allies launched Operation Overlord,
the largest amphibious invasion in history, 
landing on the beaches  of Normandy, France.
This invasion marked a turning point in the war, as the Allies gained
a foothold in Western Europe and began their push towards Germany.
